Why I Only Use 4 Guitars Out of 26

Everybody says they want the best quality.

Most people don’t.

They want convenience.

That is not a moral failure.
It is just how markets work.

And if you ignore that, you will build the wrong products, the wrong setup, and the wrong expectations.

Convenience Beats Quality More Often Than Musicians Want to Admit

Look at how people consume music:

  • tape
  • vinyl
  • CD
  • MP3
  • streaming on a phone speaker

In many cases, convenience went up while playback quality went down.

And adoption exploded.

That tells you something important:
the market does not automatically reward “best.”
It rewards what people can access, use, and repeat easily.

The Same Shift Happened in Music Production

Studios, amps, racks, and expensive signal chains got replaced in many workflows by:

  • plugins
  • amp sims
  • digital FX
  • laptop production
  • fast recall setups

Not always because the new option is “better.”
Often because it is faster, cheaper, easier, and more flexible.

That changes how musicians should think about gear.

Why I Only Use 4 Guitars Out of 26

I own 26 guitars.

I use 4 most of the time.

Why?

Because those 4 cover the practical jobs:

  • one acoustic
  • one classical
  • one fixed-bridge electric
  • one floating-bridge electric

That already gives me a serious working range.

Most of the “extra tone” decisions today come from digital tools anyway.

So if I keep reaching for guitar #17, #18, #19 just to feel productive, I am probably avoiding the real work.

Purity vs People

Here is the uncomfortable question:

Why obsess over the best analog setup if most people will hear the result on a phone speaker, earbuds, or laptop speakers?

That does not mean quality is irrelevant.

It means quality must be balanced with reality.

If your workflow is so pure that it kills output, consistency, or delivery, it may be hurting your results more than helping your sound.

Build for Real Use, Not Fantasy Use

A lot of musicians build for an imaginary listener:

  • perfect room
  • perfect speakers
  • full attention
  • ideal conditions

But real listeners are busy, distracted, mobile, and overloaded.

If you want reach, you must build with real behavior in mind.

Convenience wins because it fits real life.

Conclusion

“Why I only use 4 guitars out of 26” is not anti-gear.

It is pro-results.

Use great tools. Love great gear.
But don’t confuse ownership with outcomes.

The market rewards what people actually use—not what musicians admire in theory.

So what are you building for: purity, or people?

FAQ

Why do you only use 4 guitars out of 26?
Because four guitars cover most practical recording and playing needs, while many additional tone variations can be handled digitally.

Does convenience really beat quality in music?
Often, yes. Many listeners choose easy access and speed over the highest possible playback quality.

Are plugins and amp sims better than real amps?
Not always. But they are often faster, cheaper, and more convenient, which is why many musicians use them daily.

Is this anti-analog or anti-gear?
No. It is about choosing tools that support output and real-world use instead of slowing you down.

Should musicians stop buying guitars?
Not necessarily. Buy what you need and what you love, but do not let collecting replace creating.

Everybody says they want “the best quality.”

They don’t.
They want convenience.

Look at music:
Tape. Vinyl. CD. MP3.
Now it’s Spotify on a phone speaker.

Quality went down.
Adoption went up.

Same in production:
Studios and real amps got replaced by plugins.
Not because it’s better.
Because it’s easier.

And here’s the question nobody wants to answer:
Why obsess over the best analog gear… just to be heard on phone speakers?

I own 26 guitars. I use 4.
Because most “new tones” today are digital anyway.

The market doesn’t reward “best.”
It rewards what people actually use.
Convenience wins every time.

So what are you building for: purity… or people?
