Bad Ear? Here Are the 3 Real Reasons Why

“I can hear intervals in exercises, but not in real music.”

That’s not a bad ear.
That’s bad training.

Here’s why.

1. Real music is layered

Exercises are isolated.
Music is not.

In real songs:

  • multiple instruments play at once
  • frequencies overlap
  • rhythms interact

If you never train selective listening, your ear gets overwhelmed.

Hearing is not passive.
It’s focus.

2. Formant-dependent training

Most ear training fails because it’s done on one instrument.

Your brain doesn’t learn the interval.
It learns the sound of the instrument.

Change the timbre — and the interval “disappears”.

That’s not hearing.
That’s pattern recognition.

3. You don’t test real hearing

If you can’t sing an interval, you don’t truly hear it yet.

Singing forces:

  • internal pitch reference
  • memory
  • real recognition

No shortcuts.

How proper ear training works

Effective ear training must include:

  • multiple instruments (guitar + piano)
  • singing every interval
  • real songs, not just drills

That’s why isolated apps and endless quizzes fail long-term.

You don’t need a better ear.
You need better training.

Bad Ear? 3 Reasons Why.

Someone said:
“I can hear intervals in exercises, but in real music I can’t.”

That’s not a bad ear. That’s bad training.

There are three problems.

One: real music is layered. Exercises are isolated.
If you don’t learn to focus on one instrument inside a mix, your ear gets overwhelmed.

Two: most ear training becomes formant-dependent.
If you only train intervals on one instrument, your brain learns the sound—not the interval.

Three: you’re not testing real hearing.
If you can’t sing an interval, you don’t truly hear it yet.

That’s why in my training program we learn intervals with guitar and piano, we sing every interval, and we train with real songs. Try the tools at guitartrainingstudio.com/tools.
