Stop practicing GUITAR and start playing MUSIC! Been there done that. It took me a few weeks to understand this when I got this slapped in my face by a renowned American producer/manager in my 20s. Take your time to think about that! I see it so often, guitarists who are technically top notch, guitarists who can shred and sweep like the very best, know all possible scales at 100 notes-per-second. But 1 thing they often can not … playing music.
Second example, live : a guitarist plays a technically difficult and fast solo on stage – while the audience goes to get a drink and a piece of pizza. Afterwards, the guitarist plays 2 chords in a rhythm, and the audience goes crazy (and starts throwing pints and pieces of pizza :-D). You know that feeling “Why did I have to practice guitar for so long for that one solo, when nobody cares?”. Right, the many hours you have to practice just to get that speed is in short (unless you are a sports guitarist) pure waste of time! In short: a lot of guitarists get lost in endless technical guitar exercises, play so fast that they almost look blue from oxygen deficiency, are technically super but ultimately cannot play music. What are you doing with all the existing scales to be able to rattle off at 1000 per hour when you have no idea how to make music with it and can’t “touch” the audience with it?
